MORE than 1,000 charity wristbands created by Rebecca Dalgleish are now available throughout much of East Lothian.

The inspirational teenager, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this year, has already raised more than £20,000 for Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS).

Now, the red and yellow silicone bands, bearing the slogan ‘Rebecca’s Little Hearts for CHAS’, are available from a variety of shops, including North Berwick’s RBS, Co-op and sports centre, as well as at Fenton Barns. The bands will also be available in Gullane’s Cools and Co-op, as well as the coffee shop at Tyninghame and Dirleton Gallery.

Staff at Torness Power Station and Eve Coaches made donations, which allowed the wristbands to be created.

Rebecca, from Kingston, near North Berwick, said: “It was something that Alison Gordon [a friend of the family] wanted to do.

“She asked me to design the bands on a website about three weeks ago and they came last Friday.

“They were actually meant to be hot pink, plum purple and blue, but I still like them.

“Little hearts is a simple symbol you can do with your hands (see main image).

“I mentioned on my blog about raising awareness about children’s hospices.

“They are not what you think: they are happy places most of the time and the heart is a very positive shape and I wanted to embrace that.” A total of 1,200 of the charity wristbands were made, with a suggested donation of £1.

Money from the sales will be added to Rebecca’s phenomenal fundraising, which is closing in on £24,000.

On Sunday night, there was another fundraiser to help add to the worthy cause. The Flying Aspidistras took to the stage at Dirleton Kirk.

The fundraising figure could be set to swell even further, with a 12-hour football marathon kicking off tonight (Friday).

Ian Barrack has attracted 18 teams to take part in the five-a-side charity tournament at North Berwick Sports Centre.

The teams kick off at 9pm, with staff from the sports centre waiving the hire and staffing costs to allow the competition to kick-off free of charge.

Ian, whose daughter Hannah is in the same year at North Berwick High School as Rebecca, was hoping to raise in the region of £2,500.

A raffle will be held on the night, with prizes from Rangers FC, local hotels and taxi firms.

Meanwhile, North Berwick Rotary Club will host a coffee morning in the town’s Hope Rooms for Rebecca and CHAS on April 18.

Rebecca said: “It’s amazing. People are being so generous and I just want to thank the public again because I could not do it without them. It just feels so good to have lots of people support me.” The 17-year-old was also able to tick off another item on her bucket list last week.

She met pop supergroup McBusted at the SSE Hydro earlier this month and last week had a taste of dog sledging.

Rebecca, along with mum Pam, ventured to Aviemore for the trip.

Rebecca said: “It was fantastic. They got me on a low sledge and it goes at about eight miles per hour. It sounds slow but it still felt like it was going really, really fast.

“We were lucky as it was about 8°C and they don’t sledge if it is hotter than that for the dogs” Donate at justgiving.com/Rebecca-Dalgleish and read Rebecca’s blog at beccadalgleish.wordpress.com
