The nominees for the East Lothian Celebrating Sport Awards have been announced – and read like a who’s who of Scottish Commonwealth Games greats, as well as featuring an army of local sporting heroes and a 14-year-old world record holder.

There are a number of awards up for grabs at the ceremony, which will take place next Friday (October 3) at The Brunton in Musselburgh, from volunteer of the year to the coveted sports person of the year accolade.

For that prestigious award, a 12-strong shortlist has been named, comprising the county’s 12 members of Team Scotland in Glasgow this summer.

The likes of Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall, Josh Taylor and Dan Wallace shot to fame with their performances in Glasgow, and are among the shortlisted athletes.

Elsewhere, Maria Lyle, the 14-year-old Dunbar Grammar School pupil who holds two world records, is nominated for young sports person of the year and sports person with a disability.

Also shortlisted is Suzanne Wood, mother of young Kyle who tragically passed away earlier this year, leading to sister Kai taking her brother’s place in the Queen’s Baton Relay when it came to the county in June.

She has been nominated for the volunteer of the year for her work with the Lothian Leopards Disability Athletics Club.

There are a total of 10 awards up for grabs on the evening, and Councillor Tim Day, cabinet spokesperson for community wellbeing, hailed the sporting prowess of all those shortlisted.

He said: “The achievements of our local community in sport are truly inspiring and the Celebrating Sport Awards will recognise the contribution made by East Lothian clubs, volunteers, coaches and athletes.

“This year has been extraordinary for sport with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Queen’s Baton Relay and 10 years of Active Schools. The evening will showcase these and celebrate the achievements of the East Lothian-based Team Scotland athletes that competed at Glasgow 2014.” Enjoyleisure sponsor the event for the second year running, and Bill Axon, general manager, said: “The dedication, commitment and accomplishments of each of the nominees are truly remarkable.

“In a year that has been heightened with the excitement of sport, it is a privilege to sponsor and celebrate the contribution made by these East Lothian athletes, volunteers and coaches.” The nominated sportspeople come from a wide range of sports, from trampolining and powerlifting to football and golf.
