A DEVELOPER behind plans for a former radar station on the coast near North Berwick is trying to get previously approved proposals the green light again.

Dunbar-based Dunglass Ltd, which owns the buildings at Gin Head, Tantallon, was given planning permission for seven houses and garages on the site in October 2011.

Then, last year, it was given the go-ahead to transform the site into a luxury contemporary house.

However, the original plans for seven houses have now been re-submitted.

According to the decision notice, issued by East Lothian Council in 2011: “The development shall begin before the expiration of three years from the date of the grant of this planning permission.” That planning permission is due to expire in just over four weeks’ time.

All three members of the North Berwick Coastal ward are part of East Lothian Council’s planning committee and could have a say on the site’s future.

Under the most recently approved plans, the building, near Tantallon Castle, was to become a 14-bedroom house with an underground car park, swimming pool and spa facilities.

The new single house would have had five bedrooms for staff and five guest rooms, with the remaining four bedrooms unspecified.

It would also have boasted a library and music room, both stretching to two storeys high.

Gin Head is a former Ministry of Defence site, which was used during the Second World War to develop and test naval radar devices.

Work continued on the land during the Cold War, before it was sold to Ferranti in 1984.

The laboratory and research facilities continued to be used until closing 20 years ago, and the buildings on the site are now derelict.

Prior to those proposals, plans to change the laboratory buildings into seven houses, with garages, were also given the go ahead in October 2011.

Similar plans for seven houses were turned down in December the previous year.
