POLICE are appealing for help tracing the last movements of a man who was found dead on a beach at Prestonpans at the weekend.

The body of Scott Hamilton, 27, from Port Seton, was discovered early on Saturday morning behind The Potteries.

Officers from Police Scotland remain in the area, where they are carrying out door-to-door enquiries.

Tributes have been flooding onto social media sites from friends of Scott, who expressed their shock at the news, many decribing him as a “great mate”.

There have been claims Scott was involved in a fight in the town a fortnight before his death; however, although police are understood to be aware of the incident, they are not linking it to the tragic events of the weekend.

Police say they are treating the cause of death as unexplained and are awaiting the results of a post mortem.

But they are keen to to unravel the mystery of Scott’s final hours and where he was before he died.

Detective Superintendent Pat Campbell said: “We are keen to speak to members of the public who may have come into contact with Scott Hamilton or who saw him on the afternoon of Friday, September 5, through to the discovery of his body the following morning.

“Anyone with any information should contact Police Scotland on 101.” At Prestonpans Community Council on Tuesday, chairman Jimmy Yule expressed condolences over the death.
