WORK on a controversial £200 million incinerator near Dunbar is due to start soon.

Viridor was granted planning permission by Scottish Ministers to build a 300,000-ton energy from waste (EfW) facility on land at Oxwellmains in 2010.

New plans to create an internal site access road to serve the facility have been submitted to East Lothian Council.

Martin Grey, Scottish communications manager for Viridor, said: “Having discharged planning conditions, implemented our planning consent and developed the site electrical sub-station, Viridor is in the final stages of both minor planning modifications and selecting both technology and construction partners for our £147 million facility.

“Working in tandem with Viridor’s £100m Scottish network of advanced recycling infrastructure and part of our £500 million Scottish investment in next generation technologies, the site will play a vital role in helping Scottish corporates, councils and communities meet their zero waste obligations.

“In addition to producing enough renewable energy to power 39,000 homes, it will create 150 construction jobs and inject £10 million into the East Lothian economy each year, including £2 million in salary for local families and £2 million in local rates.”
