TWO elderly people in the county were conned into buying fake goods in the space of two hours.

Police are now appealing for witnesses after the incidents yesterday (Thursday).

The first incident took place in Cockenzie at about noon when the 93-year-old victim was driving his mobility scooter on Edinburgh Road.

He was approached by a man who engaged him in conversation, stating that he needed money to get back to Italy.

This man then followed the victim home and invited himself into the victim’s house.

He then presented a dark coloured case filled with watches and clothing and the victim was persuaded to part with a sum of money for two watches.

The suspect then left the house when he was asked to do so by the victim.

The second incident took place in Tranent at about 2pm, when an elderly man out walking was approached by a man who also stated he was looking to raise cash to buy a flight to Italy.

The victim invited the suspect into his home and was persuaded to buy three watches, two pairs of boots and perfume for a sum of money.

These goods are believed to be fake.

In both incidents, the suspect is described as being in his 40s, with an Italian accent, dressed in a brown suit and tie and driving what was described as a light-coloured, either beige or grey, expensive-looking car.

Inspector Alan Hogarth said: “Both these elderly men were distressed about being duped out of a quantity of cash and we are now keen to trace the suspect.

"Anyone who has been contacted by a male matching this description, or who has information that can assist with our enquiry, is urged to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
