East Lothian libraries are launching a summer campaign to persuade adults to read more as part of a Commonwealth promotion.

The ‘Wealth of Reading’ campaign will run in all libraries until the end of September, with the emphasis on authors and books from Commonwealth countries.

Funded by the Scottish Library and Information Council, the promotion will include works such as Brick Lane by Monica Ali, Small Island by Andrea Levy and the already-popular No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency novels by Alexander McCall Smith.

East Lothian councillor Tim Day, cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: “Reading can open up a whole world of imagination and entertainment and libraries are a great place for people to get more involved in books.

“The Wealth of Reading collection includes some hugely talented writers from around the world and features many wonderful places and characters from Commonwealth countries.

“I would encourage people to come along and pick up something new to read.” Readers taking part will also have a chance to win a brand new tablet computer by submitting a review of a book they have read from the collection at their local library. To find out more go to www.scottishlibraries.org/wor
