Hatcheries plan from Dunbar fishermen

FISHERMEN in Dunbar plan to re-populate local fishing grounds with up to 140,000 juvenile shellfish every year under proposals to install two new hatcheries in the town.

Dunbar Fishermen's Association (DFA), which represents each of the 27 boats that fish out of Dunbar Harbour, is preparing a business plan and funding applications for the project - which could be up and running by next spring.

Using a recent case study in Orkney, it is predicted that the hatcheries - one each for lobsters and prawns (langoustines) - could see the volume of shellfish landed in the town each year almost doubled.
