Pupils help John Muir museum reach milestone
JOHN Muir's Birthplace museum in Dunbar has welcomed its 100,000th visitor.
Primary five pupils from East Linton Primary School visited the museum last Wednesday and were joined by Jim Thompson, president of Friends of John Muir's Birthplace, and Dan Cairney, past president and initiator of the birthplace redevelopment completed in August 2003, as well as manager Jo Moulin and Councillor Ruth Currie.
To mark the occasion, the children were presented with an individual momento and a set of John Muir books for their school library.
In April, the birthplace will be opening an exhibition exploring the campaigns in John Muir's boyhood, adult life and in Dunbar today. 'A Gude Fechter - John Muir the Campaigner' can be visited free of charge from April to October.
Mrs Currie, East Lothian Council cabinet member for community well-being, said: "The team at the birthplace are justifiably proud of the achievement, which is testament to their commitment and hard work in communicating the story and legacy of John Muir.
"It is wonderful to know that more than 100,000 people have now enjoyed visiting this attraction. I am delighted that the pupils of East Linton Primary school have been able to share the occasion with us."
Jill Wareham, headteacher at East Linton Primary School, said: "John Muir is well established as a regular topic in school and is part of our culture of outdoor learning so we are very pleased to be here today."
