A COUNCIL report on possible traffic-calming measures around Cockenzie Primary School will include banning vehicles from Osborne Terrace at peak times in its recommendations.

The report by Colin Baird, East Lothian Council’s transport area officer, offers a number of options to deal with the ongoing problems caused by parents parking outside the school. It is likely to go before councillors in the coming weeks.

He said one option was to introduce a traffic ban on Osborne Terrance, like the one piloted in Haddington over the last year, which stops non-residents driving on the street during the hours children are travelling to and from school.

Another option is looking at ways to reduce the space on the road and take away places where people can turn their cars.

There are also calls for the speed limit on Avenue Road to be reduced to 30mph from the roundabout with Alder Road.

Mr Baird told Cockenzie and Port Seton Community Council he had held meetings with Jacqui MacKinnon, the headteacher of the school, and representatives of concerned parents.

Concerns have been raised about the safety of children travelling to school because of traffic issues caused by speeding drivers and parents dropping youngsters off at the school gates.

Mr Baird revealed that the number of children travelling to school by car in East Lothian averaged between 11 and 12 per cent – half the national average.

But he acknowleged there were concerns about the issue in Cockenzie.

He said: “We have drawn up a couple of schemes to reduce the road space and the area where people can turn their cars and hopefully this work will be done in the summer.”
