THE Co-operative has been signed up as the new tenant for a supermarket in Mid Road Industrial Estate – as part of revised plans for the site which will also include a veterinary practice and hot food takeaway.

Plans for the former Allied Textiles factory site have been lodged with East Lothian Council for final approval.

And they reveal that the Co-op is ready to move into a foodstore on the site, with a vets and a takeaway also ready to move in.

A fourth unit which is expected to be built already has considerable interest, although no tenant has been signed up as yet.

Developers Bankhead Land Limited had originally intended to create a supermarket on the site only.

However, the revised plans sees the new Co-op occupying only about half the ground, with the other units added on.

There are also plans for 37 car parking spaces, including two disabled spaces and two for parents and children.

The developers have applied for final planning permission, saying the plans will bring a long-term vacant brownfield site back into active use.

Allied Textiles closed its doors in 2009.

The developers said: “This proposal will unquestionably provide for local needs.” When the developers first revealed plans for a supermarket on the industrial estate, they were opposed by Prestonpans Community Council.

Chairman Jimmy Yule welcomed the revised plans for a smaller store and other units.

He said: “Ideally we’d like to have seen more industrial units going in there, but a smaller store is better than the supermarket.

“Our biggest concern was about the volume of traffic that would generate and problems it could cause.”
