THE Coastal Regeneration Alliance will be asking the communities surrounding the former Cockenzie Power Station to vote on its vision for the future of the site next week.

The Alliance is holding two half-hour sessions at Chalmers Memorial Church, Port Seton, where it will update people on its current position and hold a community ballot on its vision for the land, as well as the issue of community ownership of the land.

The Alliance is now a community company which describes itself as being formed to “protect the land around the former Cockenzie Power Station site for the benefit of the communities bordering the site, the walkers of the John Muir Way, cyclists on Route 76 and the many tourists and visitors to our county”.

It wants to use a ‘Community Right to Buy’ option on the land but needs a mandate from people living in the EH32 postcode area to move forward; it is seeking 1,250 signatures to back its plans.

A show of public support is vital to help it advance its hopes of keeping the land surrounding the power station – which has been earmarked by Scottish Enterprise for a giant industrial energy park, opposed by the CRA – in the community’s hands.

The meetings will be held at 7pm and 8pm, on Wednesday, in the church.

Signing sheets for the right to buy will also be on hand and are already available to download on the CRA Facebook page.
