Depending on what improvements are recommended after a home visit, and how much they cost, participants could receive free loft or cavity wall insulation, draught-proofing, radiator panels or heating controls.

People who take part in the scheme will save money on their heating bills by having free energy efficiency measures installed in their home. They will also receive personalised energy saving advice from Home Energy Scotland, the free impartial advice service funded by the Scottish Government.

Energy Saving Trust says a householder in a typical three-bedroom semi could save £145-£150 per year by installing loft or cavity wall insulation, £20-£30 by draught proofing, and £70-£150 by using room thermostats and thermostatic radiator valves.

Residents who are eligible will receive invitations to an information session, 2 December 2014, Prestonpans Community Centre.

Councillor Norman Hampshire, East Lothian Council's Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment said: “East Lothian Council is excited to be trialling this new scheme and keen to see what a difference it can make. The pilot project is one of the Scottish Government’s Home Energy Efficiency Programmes: Area Based Schemes which aim to help low-income households out of fuel poverty.” Readers who are not eligible for this scheme may qualify for other help.
