THE Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry may end up being homed outside of East Lothian despite its local links.

Plans have been lodged to build a permanent home beside Prestongrange Museum for the tapestry, which depicts the town’s historic past.

But the Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust has admitted it is in discussions with other local authorities about housing the artwork, after claiming that East Lothian Council failed to come up with a joint plan to fund its future.

Chairman Gareth Jones said the trust had tried to enter into a partnership with the local authority but had so far been unsuccessful.

He said: “The Great Scottish Tapestry was moved to the Borders and that was a loss, but the Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry is a part of the heritage of the community, and has proved a huge draw for visitors.

“We are talking to at least one other local authority about allowing them to home it, as we have to think about its future.” A council spokesperson said: “We have had a number of meetings with representatives of the trust to discuss proposals for a permanent site for the tapestry and these remain ongoing.”
