BEACH Wheelchairs at Seton Sands was officially launched last Saturday, April 21.

East Lothian Provost John McMillan welcomed guests to the event, where local children Murray and Sophie Scott cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the new boardwalk.

Local stonemason and artist Gardner Molloy donated a commemorative stone at the entrance to the ramp which names the boardwalk in memory of James Lewis, the nephew of community stalwart Marlene Young.

A child’s beach wheelchair is now available for loan from Seton Sands Holiday Village to access the beach, this was partly funded by a generous donation from Marlene in memory of her nephew.

It can be used by both local residents and customers at Seton Sands.

A large crowd gathered at the beach and Scott Glynn announced that the Walk With Scott Foundation would fund an adult beach wheelchair for Seton Sands.

The event follows the launch of North Berwick’s Beach Wheelchairs in 2015, which has allowed access to the town’s beaches for those who would have been otherwise denied it.

Funding was allocated for the project by Preston Seton Gosford Area Partnership and Sandra King, area partnership manager, said: “The Preston Seton Gosford Area Partnership is so pleased that a beach wheelchair is available at Seton Sands and the newly installed boardwalk will help people access the beach more easily.

“This will make a trip to the beach a really positive experience for families both living in and visiting the area.

“It has been great working with such a vibrant community which has pulled together to make this happen.”

Beach Wheelchairs has supported the project, sharing knowledge and expertise with staff at the Haven-run park to manage bookings. Haven has purchased a secure storage container for the wheelchair and has made staff available for training and bookings moving forward.

A spokesperson for Haven said: “Haven Seton Sands is delighted to support this fantastic project which will provide children with disabilities with an opportunity to experience the wonderful beach here. We look forward to welcoming the community and Haven guests alike.”
