RESIDENTS of a street due to be resurfaced 18 months ago say it has become unfit to use – with 12 potholes appearing in a 10-yard stretch.

People living on Redburn Road, Prestonpans, were told that work would be carried out to resurface it in September 2016.

However, community councillor Graeme Hutchison said that the work was delayed after several residents decided they wanted to put in driveways and called for additional parking to be provided.

A section of the road between North Grange Avenue and Rope Walk was left untouched and since then, Mr Hutchison said, work had ground to a halt.

Mr Hutchison said that officials at East Lothian Council had said that they could not create additional parking on the road and people were now parking on cobbles and footpaths, causing a hazard for elderly people and mothers with prams or buggies.

He said: “This section of road is now at a stage I would say was unfit for use.

Twelve, yes 12, potholes have occurred within a 10-yard section of the road, several have previously been filled in.

“Some are so big they are taking a full car tyre into them – there is no way to avoid them, there is no way to drive round them.”

Mr Hutchison accused East Lothian Council of letting people in the street down, adding: “They must have used the money which was set aside for this set of repairs for something else!”

He is now calling on local councillors to step in to make sure the road is safe for all to use.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: “[The council’s] road services [department] intended to resurface Redburn Road between North Grange Avenue and Rope Walk in October 2016; however, at that time we were asked to look at parking improvements as a priority, resulting in the planned resurfacing works being put on hold.

“Several options have been considered and discussed with local councillors and residents. A report has been produced and is currently with our stakeholders for consideration.

“In the meantime we will carry out any necessary temporary repairs to the road surface.”

Temporary patching was carried out on April 13.
