A NEW nursery at the Red School in Prestonpans has opened its doors to young families.
The new Early Learning and Childcare Centre, which the school is now being called, was created on its ground floor with a £500,000 refurbishment.
It will initially provide nursery places for three and four-year-olds before expanding to welcome two and three-year-olds who are eligible to attend.
The centre is expected to eventually accommodate up to 40 children in a space which offers varied activities such as messy play or puzzles, books and a safe play area to explore outdoors.
Fiona Robertson, head of education at East Lothian Council, said: “We are delighted that the centre in Prestonpans is now open for business.
“The new centre provides much-needed additional nursery places for a growing local population and will also serve as a centre for excellence where those interested in a career in childcare can spend time in support of their study and learning.”
Councillor Shamin Akhtar, the council’s cabinet spokesperson for education and children’s services, added: “It’s fantastic to see children now enjoying this new facility in Prestonpans.
“The opening of this new building closely follows the opening of the new extension at Law Primary School in North Berwick.
“Both of these projects are part of a wider council investment in new or expanded schools throughout East Lothian and it’s great to see the real, positive impact of this investment.”
