BONNIE Prince Charlie met...Bonnie Prince Charlie at Holyrood as the Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry went on display.

Historian Arran Johnston  who took the role of the famous prince at the exhibition was greeted by actor Andrew Gower, who plays the role in the hit drama Outlander.

And the two men posed for a picture, which has been posted on the Battle of Prestonpans Trust's website.

Outlander, which is about to move into season three in America, has proved to be a big hit with viewers in the United States but airs for the first time on UK television tonight.

The show, which is based on novels by Diana Gabaldon, is set in Scotland, with the battle of Prestonpans featuring in it and tells the tale of a young nurse who finds herself sent back in time to 1740s Jacobite Scotland.

The first series of the time-travelling drama was one of the most watched TV shows on Amazon Prime in the UK in 2015.

It begins tonight on More 4 at 9pm.

Andrew, who is best know for playing the prince in the drama series, as well as Nick Cutler in Being Human said he enjoyed the anonymity which came with the role.

He said: "The beauty of both these roles was that the characters were very removed from me. So I've been lucky to get off scot-free, without any strange encounters.

"The wigs, blood, and strange onscreen faces/voices - they haven't found their way into my day-to-day life. Yet."

The Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry is currently on display at the Scotttish Parliament.
