A PRESTONPANS couple scoop the £1,000 prize in popular Channel 4 show Come Dine With Me when their episode is aired tomorrow (Friday).

Colin and Craig Rillie-Caldwell were one of three Scots couples chosen to take part in the cooking challenge, which sees couples taking turns hosting dinner parties and then being graded on their food.

And Craig said the couple were stunned to be named the winners, after a competition which saw drama in the kitchen and the dining room.

Craig, 34, who works in finance, said: “It was really good fun and we had a laugh making the show but there was some drama.

“We had issues with our potato fondants, which they complained were a bit hard, so we were stunned to win.

“We don’t know how the other couple scored us, or what comments they made, and we won’t know until we see the show itself, but we certainly had a good time filming it and, of course, we won!”

Craig and Colin, 35, who works in travel, live on McLachlan Gardens, and are both keen cooks, although Craig admits the Come Dine With Me experience was probably the first time they had shared a kitchen together.

He said: “Colin and I both cook, but usually I take the lead and Colin jumps in.

“Being in the kitchen together was a new experience; normally if one of us is in cooking, the other one stays out, but we worked well together and even the TV crew commented on what a good team we made, so maybe it’s something we will do more of in the future.”

The couple entered the show after an appeal for contestants was issued on social media website Facebook.

They were visited three times by researchers before being told they had been picked, and found themselves competing against couples from Edinburgh and Giffnock when the series was shot in October.

On the Prestonpans menu was a starter of ‘posh’ fish and chips, pork tenderloin, and a double chocolate mousse and shortbread.

And Craig said the couple were keen to promote East Lothian’s larder. He said: “We made sure everything was locally sourced and made that our theme.”

And it went down well, as they won the £1,000 cash prize, which they spent on a holiday to Cancun, Mexico.

Now they are inundated with requests from friends to have them round for dinner.

Craig said: “We have always had social events at the house but now everyone wants us to recreate the menu we produced for Come Dine With Me when they are invited round.”

The Couples Come Dine With Me show featuring Craig and Colin is on Channel 4 tomorrow at 5pm.
