FORMER football stars turned out for the official launch of a new fun-packed sport for the over-50s last week.

Former assistant manager of Hearts FC Billy Brown; Keith Wright, ex-Scotland internationalist and current development officer for the Scottish Football Association; and former Celtic and Hibs player Jackie McNamara Snr attended the Walking Football session at Port Seton Community Centre last Monday and showed off their skills on newly-upgraded all-weather pitches there.

The two enclosed synthetic pitches next to the centre have been replaced with one 3G and one 2G artificial sport surface and are now open.

Walking Football is aimed at both men and women and is being held at the centre every Monday between noon and 1pm.

Vanda Dow, who has organised the sessions, said: “It has all the same rules as normal football but the players must walk. There is no upper age restriction, as we have people who are 85 years young coming along.

“It is not about ability, it is about a way to meet friends, get active and enjoy playing the beautiful game.”

As well as Monday sessions at Port Seton, the game is also available at the Loch Centre, Tranent, on Wednesdays, organised by Tranent Colts, from noon to 1pm.
