A PORT Seton couple are appealing for witnesses after their car was turned onto its roof during a collision with a police vehicle which was on a 999 call.

Mandy Edmond was left traumatised and with whiplash following the smash, which happened at a busy junction at Niddrie Mains Road, in Edinburgh, just 11 days after she and husband Derek were married.

And they were stunned when Police Scotland refused to accept liability for the smash, which wrote off their Skoda Citigo car, and refused to provide them with witness details.

Derek, 39, said: “Mandy was in a row of traffic at the junction when the police car came through the red light on an emergency and slammed into her. The car was flipped on its roof and ended up at a pedestrian crossing; Mandy was trapped in it for half an hour before they were able to cut her out.

East Lothian Courier:

“When the police contested our insurance claim we were shocked and we’ve had to appeal for witnesses ourselves because they’ve refused to let us see the witness statements taken at the time.”

The couple launched an appeal on Facebook for witnesses, including a woman who held Mandy’s hand as she was trapped in the car, in an effort to support their case.

The crash happened in June, as Mandy, 32, returned to work following the couple’s wedding. Derek said it had overshadowed the wedding, much to the couple’s dismay.

East Lothian Courier:

He said: “The night before the accident we were going through the wedding photos, now all people ask about is the accident rather than the wedding, which has overshadowed it a bit.

"Police descended on the accident scene and took witness statements but because Mandy was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, she was unable to gather any names or talk to witnesses herself.

“We asked for the police statements but they are refusing to let us see them or give us details for witnesses so we can approach them ourselves. We were left with no option but to appeal to the public to help us and get in touch if they were there or saw the accident.”

East Lothian Courier:

The crash happened at 8.35am on Tuesday, June 14, on Niddrie Mains Road, at the corner of Craigmillar Castle Road. To contact Derek and Mandy, visit their Facebook page, titled ‘Niddrie Car Crash’.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “With legal matters outstanding, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
