A North Berwick resident has expressed concerns over signage of the new 20mph scheme on Lochbridge Road.

A local resident, Mr Thomson, attended a meeting of the town’s community council this month to voice his concerns over the signs, which he believes are too small and could be missed by drivers.

He said: “There are signs up at the Glenburn end of Lochbridge Road, but there is nothing at the other end. I would like to see more being done and bigger signs being put in.

“What about putting the 20-miles-per-hour sign on the road as well? That would mean that drivers can’t miss it.” However, ward councillor Jim Goodfellow believes that the signs may be a temporary measure, before the traffic regulation order (TRO) comes into force.

He said: “I think they are putting up these signs in preparation for it [the TRO] coming in.” Community councillor George Johnstone added: “The signs need to be brought down because they are too high and people cannot see them.” Whin Park in Cockenzie and Muirpark in Tranent also set to be reduced from 30mph to 20mph for an initial experimental period of 18 months as part of the TRO.

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “The trial 20mph areas in North Berwick, Tranent and Cockenzie are part of the council’s plan to continue to make our roads safer. 136 repeater signs have gone up in the affected areas, in addition to 44 larger signs at the entrances of each area to make drivers aware of the new speed limit.” They added that the entry/exit signs at the Lochbridge Road junction with Law Road were the last to be installed and were being dealt with by the contractor on Wednesday.
