The Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick is calling on East Lothian residents to cast their vote, after the Bass Rock was nominated for the Nature Reserve of the Year Award.

The nomination, part of the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2014-15, comes from wildlife presenter Chris Packham, who has described “this gannet-capped island” as the “most exciting birding spectacle in the UK”.

And Tom Brock, seabird centre chief executive, added: “To have this recognition from Chris Packham and the Countryfile team is fantastic and we are now calling on Bass Rock fans near and far to show their support “Home to over 150,000 gannets at the peak of the breeding season, as well as a whole host of other seabirds and marine wildlife, the Bass Rock truly is a wildlife wonder. The Seabird team hopes as many people as possible cast their vote and help the Bass Rock secure the title of Nature Reserve of the Year.” The county location is up against a quartet of nominees from south of the Border for the award.

The other nominees are: RSPB Minsmere, Suffolk; WWT London Wetland Centre, London; Martin Down NNR, Wiltshire; and Woolston Eyes Reserve, Warrington.
