A NORTH Berwick resident who left a trust fund to benefit the town after her death could soon be honoured.

East Lothian Council is set to change the procedures for naming streets in new developments, putting the onus on community councils to come up with suggestions.

While the decision will ultimately lie with the local authority, the issue was discussed at North Berwick Community Council’s (NBCC) final meeting of the year, held last week.

And members proposed to name streets in the CALA Homes development at Gilsland after Stella Moffat, with ‘Moffat Place’ the suggested name.

Sheila Sinclair, the group’s chairwoman, confirmed she would contact the council to indicate their preference to honour Stella, who left money to the townspeople after she died in 2001. Other suggestions for street names included former community council chairpeople, those who have received honours from the Queen and even Stevenson, after world-famous author Robert Louis Stevenson, whose novel Treasure Island was inspired by holidays to the town.

Anyone who has names can contact their local councillor with suggestions, or email cag@eastlothian.gov.uk A bank of names will be drawn up for each area and allocated to developments when required.
