A North Berwick resident is concerned that height restriction barriers are preventing people visiting the town’s tourist attractions.

Anita Nutter spoke at a recent meeting of North Berwick Community Council (NBCC) about her inability to park at the harbour after height restrictions were introduced in the summer.

She told NBCC members: “I am not able to walk very far, and these restrictions prevent me from going down to the beach.

“My campervan is my only mode of transport.” Ward councillor Jim Goodfellow (Lab) counteracted the claims by suggesting there were parking spaces available for those in her position, naming North Berwick Rugby Club’s Recreation Park as one possible parking area.

“Recreation Park car park has just been done up, and it’s rarely busy during the day,” he said.

Councillor Goodfellow advised Anita to apply for a disabled parking permit, which would allow her to park not only in the disabled parking spaces, but also on single yellow lines in the town.

And fellow ward councillor Tim Day (Con) agreed that the restrictions were put in place to stop campervan owners turning the car parks into a “de facto campsite”.

The community councillors, after much discussion, agreed that the height restriction barriers were a positive step to stopping campervans parking overnight in the coastal car parks.
