A North Berwick man has cycled more than 500 miles across Europe, raising more than £1,000 for charity.

Callum Mark, who plays for the town’s rugby club, cycled 542 miles between Amsterdam and Berlin to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer Scotland.

The 27-year-old completed the mammoth five-day cycle with a group of friends, and has smashed his fundraising goals – Callum only set out to raise about £250 but has gone on to take in £1,200.

And the activities manager at Foxlake was delighted to have finished the gruelling cycle for a cause close to his heart.

He said: “Over the last 10 years, my grandmother has struggled with the onslaught of dementia and all of the confusion, isolation and the gradual increased reliance on others that it brings.” And of the mammoth cycle, he confessed he had it easier than other members of the team.

Callum, vice-captain of North Berwick RFC, added: “It was a really tough physical challenge for me as I haven’t been cycling long.

“My body held out alright, apart from struggling with a knee injury.

“The support given by friends and family and all those that donated definitely helped me push through and finish the challenge. Some of the boys I was with did it on fix-geared bikes so my job was a walk in the park comparatively.” Donate at www.justgiving.com/Callum-Mark
