Ten members of the North Berwick-based East Lothian Merchant Navy Association travelled to London to take part in the organisation’s annual parade and commemorative service.

Boosted by a £1,000 grant from the Stella Moffat Trust, the men travelled to London as part of the Merchant Navy commemorations, which take place annually on or around September 3.

That date is the anniversary of the official outbreak of the Second World War, and also the day when the first merchant ship was sunk by a U-boat.

A national parade is held on the closest Sunday, this year falling on September 7, when a commemorative service was held at the Merchant Navy Memorial at Tower Hill in London.

Members from all over the UK, including the county’s own branch, parade with their standards to the memorial gardens.

The county group attended last year’s parade thanks to a grant from Awards for All Scotland, and made the decision to save up for the funds for this year’s event, while aso receiving the donation from the Stella Moffat Trust.

The 10-strong party that travelled to London comprised of Bill Howie, Errol Tait, Bill Gibson, Jim Dow, Allan McLeish, John Dillon, Bob Bryson, Michael Purvis, Stuart Tait and chairman Donald Skinner.
