PROGRESS is being made on the development of a multi-purpose arts centre in North Berwick after the group behind the idea secured funding.

Since the formation of an arts group in 2012, consisting of representatives from a number of organisations, members have been working towards developing a multi-purpose arts centre incorporating theatre, cinema and performance in North Berwick.

A public meeting was held in February last year for residents to have their say on the venture and now North Berwick Arts Centre Steering Group has secured funding from the National Lottery and the North Berwick Common Good Fund.

The funding will be used to conduct a feasibility study and options appraisal to assess the viability of building and running a purpose-built sustainable arts venue in North Berwick.

The steering group is about to appoint consultants to carry out the study, who will report back during this summer.

Ian Watson, chairman, said: “I am extremely happy to have reached this noteworthy stage so quickly and also to be working with such a positively forward-looking group of people.”
