PLANS for a North Berwick Food Market next month have been put on the back burner by organisers following the arrival of an indoor market on High Street.

North Berwick Food Market Group was set to start at Easter this year, providing products and items that are not readily available on High Street.

However since then, new business idea whynot? has arrived in the town.

A spokeswoman for North Berwick Food Market Group said: “Over the last few weeks we have seen independent food outlets arrive on the High Street at the indoor market: fresh fish, superb bakery goods, fruit and veg, oils and crackers, cheeses, jams and chutneys, and marshmallows to boot.

“There is a real desire for greater variety of locally supplied and produced food. To provide this was always the primary aim of the Food Market Group with the knowledge that a general boost to High Street, tourism numbers, education about food, opportunities for new enterprises and so on would follow.

“Given that the primary aim is being fulfilled to some extent, the decision has been taken to, for the moment at least, suspend plans for a monthly market.

“We feel it is sensible to see how this indoor, daily offering progresses. Duplication of offers and the time needed for suppliers to attend two locations are unlikely to make an outdoor market feasible.” By making its research available for all to see, the group believes it has helped to open the way for local producers and suppliers.

“We firmly believe that the buzz created by the Food Market Group and our supporters has made a real contribution to what is happening now on High Street,” the spokeswoman explained.

“Our research has been made freely available and, through our immensely successful trials, we alerted producers and retailers to the financial and other benefits of a market stall.” The group paid thanks to its supporters, members of the group, businesses on High Street, Law Primary School, Fingers and Thumbs, Transition North Berwick and its sponsors.
