A VIDEO of a football-themed cake ‘prank’ has gone viral.

North Berwick cake maker Debi McKay, who runs the town’s Buttercup Cafe, was asked to create a retirement cake with a special surprise for Hearts FC fan Robert Watson.

For his retirement party at Edinburgh’s Wardie Bowling Club, Debi baked a magnificent Hearts-themed cake in the club’s maroon colours, complete with club crest.

But lifelong fan Mr Watson got a huge shock when he cut the cake and discovered the sponge inside was green – the colour of Hearts’ arch-rivals Hibernian FC.

Realising the joke was on him, he was captured on video stabbing the green cake slice with the cake knife.

The video was posted online and has now been watched more than 40,000 times.

Debi, whose boyfriend Kevin Samuel worked with Mr Watson, said: “I made a Harry Potter cake once that was viewed about 5,000 times online but I’ve never had anything like this before.

“I put the video up on Saturday and the response from people has been brilliant. It’s been the talk of [Kevin’s] work.”

Debi, 24, who is also a bikini model and is in training for the world championships in Las Vegas in August, told the Courier how Mr Watson’s initial horror turned to laughter when he saw the funny side of the joke.

And she added: “The people at his work wanted it to be football-related cake because he’s a big fan, but they wanted a bit of a surprise.”

Debi said the reaction to the video footage – which can be viewed on her DMYC Facebook page – had been “amazing”.

It was the first time she had made a football club-themed cake with a rival team’s colours inside and said it was “a lot of fun to make”.

“It took quite a while to bake because there was a lot of sponge in it but once it had cooled down it probably only took a couple of hours,” she explained.
