TWO people were rescued by North Berwick RNLI after being cut off by the tide at Seacliff on Sunday afternoon.

A man and woman were stranded on the Ghegan Rock at the beach, on the outskirts of North Berwick, when the North Berwick RNLI was called at 3.30pm.

Within 10 minutes, they reached the man and woman, who were then brought back to shore.

Rhona Meikle, North Berwick RNLI helm, praised the member of the public who initially raised the alarm.

She said: "The concerned member of the public did the right thing by contacting the Coastguard at the earliest opportunity.

"In response, the lifeboat was launched to investigate.

"The two persons were quickly returned to shore, safe and dry.

"The lifeboat and crew were back at the station within 30 minutes – it was a very straightforward rescue."

North Berwick Coastguard posted on its Facebook page: "HM Coastguard were contacted by a member of the public at Tantallon Castle who could see that 2 people had become cut off by the tide.

"We responded to the scene quickly, got eyes on, and directed the lifeboat to their location.

"After the lifeboat had landed them safely on the beach, we confirmed that they were uninjured and returned to station."
