COUNTY-BASED doctor James Logan will appear on national television on Monday evening, as he presents a documentary about the painted lady butterfly.

James, who is associate professor in the department of disease control at the London School of Hygene and Tropical Medicine, presents the BBC Four show alongside Martha Kearney.

The pair follow the migration of the painted lady butterfly north from Morocco, with some travelling as far as the Arctic Circle – a journey of about 9,000 miles.

Dr Logan, who is from North Berwick, told the Courier: "The programme is all about the life of the painted lady butterfly.

"It was good for me because this kind of thing is what my background is in.

"It was a real eye-opener for me."

While Martha travelled to Morocco for filming, Dr Logan, who has appeared on a number of television programmes, remained in the UK.

He added: "I missed out on the travelling, which was a bit disappointing.

"Martha was out in Morocco but I followed them in the UK.

"We did a host of experiments – we attached an antenna to one of the butterflies to show us where they go when they are in our gardens.

"That allows us to work out what we can do to help them.

"Really, it's all about the science behind what they do."

You can see Dr Logan on 'The Great Butterfly Adventure: Africa to Britain with the Painted Lady' on BBC Four at 9pm on Monday.
