AN OLYMPIC silver medallist was on hand to show off his prize possession at a community event in North Berwick last Saturday.

Mark Robertson was part of the Team GB rugby sevens squad who won silver behind Fiji in Rio last month and he visited North Berwick RFC to show off his medal.

The 31-year-old, who plays for Scotland Sevens, attended the I Am Team GB event at Recreation Park.

A host of fun and games was laid on for youngsters and Iain Dove, North Berwick RFC president, was delighted to have hosted the event.

He said: “Sport brings communities closer together and we are immensely proud to be part of this.”

Former Edinburgh Rugby and Melrose wing Robertson posed for pictures with fans both young and old, even lending them his Olympic medal.

His trip to the county club had been arranged by Jason White, head coach at North Berwick, who works for Red Sky Management, the agency who look after Robertson.

The Borderer tweeted: “Thanks @NorthBerwickRFC for having me along today. Great to see so many kids excited about the #IAmTeamGB event!”

The day also raised money for the Duncan McLean Fund, set up in memory of the 20-year-old Duncan who died suddenly earlier this year.

Duncan, who passed away on February 28 aged 20 from a previously undiagnosed brain tumour, was a keen sportsman, and represented the club’s 1st XV less than a month before his death.

His dad Iain thanked everyone involved for helping raise money in memory of his son.

He tweeted: “Many thanks @NorthBerwickRFC @marky_robertson raising £££ today for Duncan McLean Fund @BrainTumourOrg #IAmTeamGB.”

Organisers thanked everyone for their help in making the day – part of a nationwide scheme to acknowledge the achievements of Team GB at the Rio Olympics – such a success.

Susie Walker, the club’s business development manager, said: “I am delighted with the attendance, involvement, high spirits and great atmosphere.

“For afirst time event, organised with only 10 days notice, it has been great.

“It is a day that will definitely be repeated.”
