TWO lifesaving North Berwick youngsters were presented certificates by the town's community council this week.

Robert Lenk and Abbie Borthwick saw a man collapse on Abbey Road in North Berwick on an August evening about a year ago.

Mr Lenk, a 19-year-old former North Berwick High School pupil, was first on the scene and helped the man – Andrew Cox.

Moments later, 14-year-old Abbie stopped and phoned the emergency services.

Robert then began CPR on Mr Cox until a first responder and subsequently an ambulance, arrived at the scene.

Mr Cox was taken to hospital, where he made a remarkable recovery, apart from having no memory of the evening's event.

In recognition of the lifesaving response by Robert and Abbie, the Royal Humane Society awarded each of them a certificate for their action.

Sheila Sinclair, the chairwoman of North Berwick Community Council at the time of the incident, nominated the pair for the awards, and handed over certificates earlier this week.

David Kellock, the current chairman, said at the presentation on Tuesday evening: "We so often read and hear negative comments about young people and only occasionally of their positive community contributions.

"So, this evening we are pleased to be able to recognise formally such a positive contribution of selfless action by young people and to present these certificates to Robert and Abbie for their worthy and immediate responses that resulted in Andrew’s life being saved."
