A long-awaited news sea defence wall at North Berwick harbour was officially opened last month.

Michael Williams, Lord Lieutenant for East Lothian, officially opened the wall, which was funded by Viridor Credits, to the tune of £324,000.

The need for the wall came after the harbour suffered damage during storms in 2010 and 2012.

Last year, North Berwick Harbour Trust Association won funding from Viridor Credits to build a new sea defence wall to provide additional protection against any future storm damage.

Although the wall has been in place for some time – building was finished little over a year ago – its official opening has only just taken place, on August 12.

Jane McMinn, chairwoman of the harbour trust association, was delighted to see the new wall built.

She told the Courier: "The sea defence wall development has protected our current use of the harbour and will enable further use, and development of the area for the community, small businesses, and visitors.

"We've had a great season with Fringe by the Sea, 200-odd boats and families participating in the National Toppers, while staying in North Berwick, as well as the day-to-day boat trips, and fishing.

"We also have new businesses like Stand Up Paddleboarding and wetsuit hire taking off and complementing the existing North Berwick Kayak Hire.

"The Lobster hatchery is unique in Scotland, as is the very popular Lobster Shack."

She also thanked Viridor Credits, who were represented at the official opening by Barbara Wyllie and Paul Zochowski, for their help.

Jane added: "Viridor have helped to protect this and enable further use, so we'd like to say a huge thank you to them."
