AN AWARD will be presented at North Berwick High School in memory of inspirational teenager Rebecca Dalgleish.

The former pupil tragically passed away in December last year after battling cancer for 18 months and after raising more than £60,000 for Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS).

That figure has since risen further and now tops more than £70,000, as donations have continued to come in.

Now, North Berwick High School is set to present an award in her memory at the school's prizegiving next Thursday (September 8) evening.

Parents Pam and Richard Dalgleish were touched by the gesture.

Richard said: “We are really pleased to hear that.

“I know it was on her bucket list and she had wanted to raise some money and I think she had asked to have some sort of award made for her in her name.

“I think she would have been pleased.”

Rebecca, from Kingston, was diagnosed with a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) in June 2014.

Then 17 years old, she set to raise as much money as possible for CHAS, who provide the only hospice services in Scotland for children and young people who have life-shortening conditions for which there is no known cure.

Rebecca, who passed away on December 3, set her sights on not just raising money but also achieving as many things as possible – from going “somewhere hot and sunny in Spain on a beach and pool holiday” to going “to IKEA for some meatballs.”

Her story caught the attention of celebrities as well, as she met X-Factor runner-up Olly Murs, former Countdown presenter Carol Vorderman and even received a special personalised video from pop supergroup McBusted, while they were on tour in Australia.

Donation tins can still be found in North Berwick, with donations continuing to be made.

Richard added: “Obviously, we would much rather have Rebecca back but we can do these things things she would have been pleased with the money going to good use.”
