The fatal collision took place at about 2.20am on Saturday, August 1, on the B1348 Musselburgh to Prestonpans coast road, west of Prestongrange Museum.
A passing motorist discovered a red Ford Galaxy on the eastbound verge, facing west, having struck a lamppost.
A 69-year-old man was discovered within and police and emergency services were called. The Scottish Ambulance Service took the man to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, however he was later pronounced dead.
He is believed to have started his journey in the Port Seton area.
Police are now investigating the incident and are eager to speak to anyone who may have information.
Sergeant Neil Inglis said: “We are eager to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident, particularly if they were on the B1348 in the early hours of this morning.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact police immediately."
A hand-written message on flower left at the scene, said: "God Bless RIP from taxi driver."
