MUSSELBURGH’s newly elected Honest Lad admitted he broke down in tears of joy when his name was read out as the winner last weekend.

Kieran Davidson was thrilled when he was elected to represent the town in this year’s summer festival.

And the announcement topped a great week for his family, after his grandmother Isa Wilson was named Musselburgh and Inveresk Community Council’s Citizen of the Year.

Kieran, 24, who attended Oatridge College to do equine studies, is a regular face working either for his uncle Neil at Wilson’s fruit shop or at Musselburgh Racecourse, as well as caring for children at breakfast clubs, creches or after-school clubs around the county.

The former St David’s High School pupil, who was born and raised in Musselburgh, was an attendant at the festival last year and was elected as this year’s Honest Lad last Friday night.

He said: “A sun-filled week of canvassing really paid off. I was elated when my name was announced and I couldn’t help but break down and cry with tears of joy. Bring on July.” This year’s Honest Lass – who will join Kieran in representing the town over the summer – is Mhairi Braby.

Mhairi, 21, who works at the town’s Tesco store, is a former Musselburgh Grammar School prefect.

She said: “I couldn’t believe it when my name was announced as Honest Lass 2015. It is a hard feeling to describe. It’s overwhelming.

“I am honoured to have been chosen and am really looking forward to the summer ahead.” Honest Toun’s Association vice-president Alison Elgin said the turnout for the election last Friday had been high and plans were well under way for the festival in July.

She said: “Kieran, Mhairi and the official party will be really busy representing Musselburgh at community events and at celebrations in the Border towns. I know that they are all looking forward to the year ahead and to Musselburgh Festival in particular.” Festival week formally kicks off on Sunday, July 19 with the Kirkin Parade and Service.
