THE Battle of Pinkie Cleugh was commemorated in a ceremony at the memorial stone recently.

Members of the Pinkie Cleugh Battlefield Group led a walk to the stone from the Roman Bridge, at 11am last Wednesday along the Battlefield Trail.

Roger Knox, Dr Andrew Coulson and Alan Stevens from the group guided people along the trail to the stone, where Alister Hadden, president of The Old Musselburgh Club, presided over the commemoration ceremony.

Mr Hadden thanked those who had come along to be part of the ceremony to pay tribute and testimony to those 10,000 Scots who lost their lives in the fields near the town on September 10, 1547.

He proceeded to give an account of the battle as it unfolded, then asked Dr Coulson to read out the Honour Roll of the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh for those who were slain there on ‘Black Saturday’.

Mr Hadden also thanked the people who had erected the Memorial Stone so the historic battle could be commemorated, and piper Neil Hay for his musical tributes.

He also paid tribute to Alistair Hare for convening the event and to Dr Coulson for reading out the names of the Fallen, before asking Celia Coulson to lay the floral tribute at the stone.

Mr Hadden also thanked pupils from Wallyford Primary School who attended the ceremony and those that had gone on the battlefield walk, as well as East Lothian Council for the funding provided from the local authority’s Civic Pride Fund to lay paving around the Pinkie Cleugh Memorial Stone to enhance the area, and Angus N Bathgate for taking photographs at the event.
