A FOOTBALL tournament was held in memory of a popular former Hearts player from Musselburgh at Olive Bank at the weekend.

Friends and family of Steven Slater gathered to take part in the seven-a-side event, as well as raise money for local causes.

The Steven Slater Festival of Football was organised to celebrate and remember the life of Steven, who died in March of this year.

Steven, who was 25, fulfilled his boyhood dream when he signed with Hearts at the age of 16.

The tournament drew a good crowd, with Steven’s dad Andy taking donations at the entrance and handing out programmes.

Money raised will be split between Musselburgh Grammar School and Musselburgh Windsor FC and will go towards buying strips for young players, with Steven’s name on them.

Scott Gourlay’s Slug FC won the tournament, with Eight Guys and A Panda, led by Steven’s younger brother Michael, coming in second place.

There was a good crowd watching.

The player of the tournament was awarded to Steven’s former school team mate Kevin Smith, who now plays with East Fife.

Steven’s dad Andy said: “I just want to thank everyone, all the players who took part and the spectators who came along, as well as Scott Robertson for all his hard working in organising the event.

“They all made it a special day and I think Steven would have been proud.”
