A FILM about a UFO hoax by Musselburgh-based filmmakers Bill Walsh and Matt Nanson scooped a top award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

‘The April Fool’ was named ‘Best Film’ on Saturday after it took part in the Short Challenge.

The short video, which was shot around East Lothian, Edinburgh and Ireland, tells the tale of the hoax which does not quite work out.

Director Bill Walsh said it was inspired by a fake news report about a UFO which was created by the film-making team and posted on social media but failed to take off.

He said: “We set about creating a ‘mockumentary’ about the making of our UFO hoax, poking fun at the fact that it was a bit of a failure in social media terms.

“We were delighted when it was announced that The April Fool had been awarded overall Best Film.

“The prize was a Go Pro professional camera and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival in Bristol next month.” Graphic designer and illustrator Bill has lived in Musselburgh for four years and worked with fellow Honest Toun resident Matt to create the movie, which also featured Edinburgh actors Robert Mack and Sandro Sotirchos, as well as calling in favours from friends, family and a few other Musselburgh residents.
