MUSSELBURGH will pay tribute to those lost in the First World War tomorrow (Saturday) with a special gathering in The Brunton.

Relatives of people who served during the war have been invited to the afternoon event, which will feature performances and readings from across the generations.

Youngsters from the town’s local schools will take part in re-enacting life during the Great War, with history lessons covering everything from the recruitment of ‘pals battalions’ to life on the Home Front, and in the trenches.

Second World War veteran Dr Tom Renouf, former Major in the Black Watch, and renowned historian, will be a guest speaker during the gathering.

Afternoon tea will be provided before a tribute to Passchendaele is put on by the 61st Boys Brigade (Edinburgh) Musselburgh Company.

Poetry readings will be held and a selection of popular wartime songs will be performed by the Melville Music Hall Company.

There will also be a tribute to the roles played by the town’s cadet organisations.

Major Michael Williams, Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian, will also take part in the afternoon, which has been entitled Musselburgh Remembers 1914-1918.

Organised by Musselburgh and Inveresk Community Council, the commemoration aims to honour those who gave their lives and were affected by the war in its centenary year.

Community council chairwoman Irene Tait said: “We would like to sincerely thank all the participants who have kindly given their time to contribute towards this memorial event.”
