A NEW council housing estate in Musselburgh welcomed its first tenant last week as residents began moving into the houses at Goose Green Crescent.

Annie Green took posession of her new two-bedroom flat on the estate after living in the area for 48 years.

The pensioner was welcomed to her new home on Monday by Councillor Norman Hampshire, East Lothian Council’s housing spokesperson, and Hart Builders’ Robert Kerr.

Hart Builders were brought in by the local authority to build 19 new properties on the council-owned land, which was the former stables for the racecourse.

The £1.7m project began construction in March last year and includes two new children’s play areas and improved parking and landscaping on the street.

Mrs Gordon, who can see her old house from her new living room window, said: “I have lived in the area for 48 years and brought up my three children here.

“It feels wonderful to have moved and this flat is absolutely lovely.

“It’s a much better size for me and saves me having to keep on cleaning rooms that are no longer used. And there’s no stairs either. I love my new home.” Mr Hampshire said the new homes, which range from one-bedroom flats and bungalows to three-bedroom family houses, were a welcome addition to the council’s current stock.

He said: “This sort of housing mix is great for building sustainable communities and is really useful in encouraging downsizing and transfers.”
