THE best Scottish talent performs in Musselburgh this month as the Brunton Theatre plays host to acts from this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Internationally acclaimed Shetland band Filska were due to take to the stage last night (Thursday) with a blend of traditional and contemporary melodies and songs.

Scotland's three tenors, Caledon, make a welcome return with their all-new show tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday).

Blazin' Fiddles bring their unique sound on Monday and Tuesday, combining fiddle music from various regions of the highlands and islands. WhileEdinburgh jazz and swing singer Todd Gordon celebrates Johnny Mercer, the legendary American lyricist, next Wednesday.

Next Friday, Pencaitland-based Simon Thacker leads his acclaimed ensemble Camerata Ritmata, merging classical, jazz, Latin and flamenco in a new programme that will include two world premieres.

One of the premieres is Brazilian bassist Mario Caribe's newly minted suite of works by fellow countryman and legendary composer/performer Egberto Gismonti, whose work draws on a multitude of sources, including native Brazilian, Webern, Jimi Hendrix, Ravel and Django Reinhard.

Simon was recently appointed Honorary Fellow in Music at the University of Aberdeen and has given solo recitals in the US and Spain.

He will also be leading The Nava Rasa Ensemble - a project featuring nine leading Indian and Western classical musicians - on a prestigious tour across the UK later in 2009 and will release a CD of the group.

Camerata Ritmata will be joined on stage by guest vocalist Daisy Chute, of Musselburgh, who recently featured in a TV special for Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the US. Daisy will soon be releasing her third album with group All Angels, whose debut album reached the top 10 in the national album charts and number two in the classical charts.

All tickets are priced £14.50 (£12.50) and are on sale from the Brunton Theatre Box Office on 0131 665 2240 or online at www.bruntontheatre.co.uk.

Meanwhile, the theatre has installed hi-tech screening equipment to provide East Lothian residents with a state-of-the-art cinema on their doorstep.

A new, large screen and surround sound system was purchased with support from Friends of Brunton Theatre and will be in use throughout the theatre's new season.

To celebrate the theatre's 30th anniversary, a selection of films first released in 1979 - as well as some new releases - will be screened. These include BAFTA award-winning Manhattan and Apocalypse Now.

And, due to popular demand, a finalist from a BBC1 talent show will perform an extra date in October at the Brunton Theatre as part of his UK tour.

Keith Jack, who was runner-up in Any Dream Will Do, will star in An Evening at the Musicals on two consecutive evenings.

The 21-year-old from Edinburgh will take to the stage with a selection of hits from Broadway and London's West End, including High School Musical, Les Miserables, The Lion King, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat.

Tickets priced £15 (£13) are on sale now for performances on Friday 9 and Saturday, October 10, from the Brunton box office.
