VANDALS who destroyed goalposts used by a youth football team in Musselburgh have been branded “despicable”.

Full-size goalposts used by Musselburgh Windsor on the all-weather 3G playing surface at Pinkie were smashed and have been ruined as a result.

A post on the club’s Facebook page confirmed that two sets of goals had been destroyed and those responsible had caused “thousands of pounds’ worth of damage”.

It adds: “This is a despicable act and it needs dealt with.”

A police investigation is now under way into the incident, which took place between Sunday and Monday.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the Courier: “Police received a report of vandalism to goalposts in the grounds of Pinkie St Peter’s Primary School, Musselburgh.

“The incident happened at some point between Sunday, December 24, and Monday, December 25. Anyone with information that can assist officers with their inquiries is asked to contact them on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting incident number 1615 of December 26.”
