A MUSSELBURGH man serving a driving ban was caught behind the wheel of an Audi car he had stolen.

Robert Watters had taken the vehicle from outside a home on Tranent’s New Row before heading towards Wallyford in the stolen A4.

But the 27-year-old was caught and stopped by police officers as he neared the Strawberry Corner roundabout.

After being pulled over, Watters, of Macbeth Moir Road, then failed to provide the officers with a breath test as they believed him to be under the influence of drink or drugs.

Watters was in the dock at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last Wednesday where he admitted three charges and had not guilty pleas to three others accepted by the Crown.

He admitted stealing the A4 estate, driving while banned, and failing to give a breath sample at New Row and Strawberry Corner on May 12.

Sheriff John Cook handed Watters a 16-month driving ban and placed him on an 18-month drug treatment and testing order. The order stipulates that Watters must take part in eight samples a month in order to complete his sentence.
