A 30-year-old man is in hospital with serious head injuries after he was attacked while walking his dogs in the middle of the day.

Police are appealing for witnesses after describing the assault on the man as "brutal and random".

He was attacked as he walked on Eskview Terrace, Musselburgh, with two dogs at around 12.50pm yesterday.

Witnesses described his assailant as a white man, in his twenties, with short dark hair.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he remains in a serious condition.

Detective Sergeant Lynsey Thomson of Dalkeith CID said: “This was a brutal and random attack and we are keen to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

“I would ask anyone who was in the Eskview Terrace area of Musselburgh around the time and saw anything suspicious, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
