A DOG owner is appealing for witnesses after her pet came in from the garden with what appeared to be a gaping knife wound.

Police have been called in after Courtney-Ann Cartledge's dog suffered the injury while in her garden in Pinkie Hill Crescent, in Musselburgh, yesterday morning.

She took to social media asking for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to get in touch.

Her post with pictures of the dog's injury went viral on social media as people angrily condemned the attack.

Courtney-Ann said on the post "my dog was out in the garden just like any other morning, we shouted on her to get her in and to our surprise realised she had a big slice down her right side, witch (sic)appears to be a knife according to the vets, just would like to know if anyone has seen anything to keep an eye out for yours self if you own a dog, if anyone knows anything please let us know."

Police Scotland confirmed it had been contacted about the incident.

A spokesperson said: "We have had a report of a dog being injured in Pinkie Hill Crescent, Musselburgh."
