STAFF and pupils have opened a new cafe for the community at Wallyford Primary School.

Held every Friday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am, Team Wallyford Community Cafe offers villagers the chance to have a cuppa and healthy breakfast snacks, hosted by children in P7.

East Lothian Roots and Fruits are supporting the venture by offering five-a-day bags for £1 as well as other local produce including free range eggs.

The cafe, a new addition to the school’s Family Fridays venture, was organised by principal teacher Emma Bennion and learning assistant Kirsty McLeod as part of a team initiative.

Emma also takes a fitness session for parents which is supported by a creche.

Kirsty said: “We are hoping to get families and members of the community in to see our school and meet us – just to be part of our school community. It is such an exciting venture and a new idea.”

It is hoped to invite elderly residents from the local care home to have a cup of tea at the cafe.

Pupils will also lead workshops such as IT and parents will get the chance to vote for what they would like to see on the menu which launched with pancakes last Friday.

The cafe even has its own logo, a cupcake and the Wallyford wheel, designed by two pupils Stanley Wiggins, P6, and Caitlyn Rintoul, P7.

Carol Agnew, parent council chairwoman, added: “I think it’s really exciting to see the children involved, parents supporting their children and to be able to come into the school, to meet teachers, see the children in their classroom and to see parents interacting with each other.”
