TESCO has revealed it plans to scrap 24-hour opening at its Musselburgh store from November as part of a nationwide change for nightshift workers.

The supermarket chain is planning to change the hours of 30 round-the-clock stores across the United Kingdom, including the store at Olive Bank.

Staff have been told that from Monday, November 7, the store will only be open between 6am and midnight.

Workers affected by the scrapping of the nightshift will be offered alternative hours or a transfer to another store with night shifts.

Discussions are currently ongoing between the staff and management of the store.

A Tesco spokesman said the changes to the chain's operations were not expected to affect the stores in Haddington or North Berwick.

He said: "We’re making some changes in a number of our stores to help us run them more simply and deliver the best possible service for customers. We understand this may be disruptive for some of our colleagues and where there have been changes to a colleague’s role we will be working really hard to ensure they are fully supported."

As well as closing the stores overnight, it is understood replenishing stock will now be carried out during the new opening times.

The Musselburgh Tesco Extra store, which opened on its current site in 2010 applied for permission from East Lothian Council's licensing board to extend its delivery times to allow a 3am drop-off at the store last November, despite objections from local residents.

The company was unable to confirm how many staff would be affected by the changes in East Lothian.
